Congo

Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend a movie screening and round table discussion about what is happening in the Congo. I was totally ignorant that there was even any problems in Congo. There has been 125 years of suffering that has been ignored by most of the world. I could not believe the horrors that happen everyday. What was described was heart breaking, disgusting and frustrating to say the least.

6,000,000 million people have died in the Congo since 1994.

3 out of 5 Women in the Congo are raped.

There are billions of dollars of resources harvested from the Congo and its people see none of the profits.

Everyday, people are used as slaves to harvest natural resources.

I asked the student who was leading the discussion what the people in the Congo wanted from every day americans. She said the most important thing was that people just become aware. They want people to know their stories because as long as it is ignored than no change will come.

Below are the websites that the Congolese students wanted us to use to spread the word. If the youtube link does not work the documentary is called "Crisis in the Congo". It is very hard to watch but I think it is important to see. I did not want to just post this on FaceBook and have people think it is some "get one million likes scheme". They asked that we use the electronics made using resources obtained in the Congo to spread the word.  I would ask you to look into each of these sites and read about the suffering of the Congolese. Please find a way to expose friends, family, classmates, strangers or anyone to the violence in the Congo.
